The Sloper

How To Design Your Own Clothes And Make Your Own Patterns By Claudia Ein
Chapter One: Introduction
Section One: The Basic Sloper System

Narration:
The most useful tool in making custom clothes quickly is a sloper. A basic pattern that fits you perfectly.
A basic pant sloper fitted perfectly can be used for work pants, dress slacks, wrap shorts, etc.
A Basic blouse sloper can be used for a warm wool flannel button up work shirt, a delicate lace dress blouse, or even a jacket.
A basic A-Line dress sloper can be used for a summer play dress, a church dress, or an evening gown.
A basic dress sloper can be used together for any kind of dress that starts with the skirt and top as separate pieces. From a pinafore to a belted full skirted dress for dancing. It can also be seperated and the skirt used to make stand alone skirts, and the top combined with the pants to make overalls or even coveralls or a fashion romper.

It is made by starting with a pattern for a basic garment and using a muslin to fit it perfectly. That muslin is then taken apart and the individual pieces traced onto heavy paper to make the permanent sloper pattern.

The final pattern can be made sturdy by laminating it with contact laminate. It needs to be stored hung not folded or rolled.

When using the pattern you won't pin to fabric and cut around, you will need to weigh it down with pattern weights and trace around it. Then remove the pattern and cut just inside the line so that there is no lines on the fabric pieces.

Thoughts:
I love this idea, it is so brilliant to have a basic pattern that is fitted to you already to test paper patterns to. Then adjust the patterns before cutting out expensive fabric or wasting a bunch of muslin fitting and refitting over and over again. It saves time, money, and frustration. I'm so excited to get started on these. While this section says there is no need for me to make them all, I will because I want a wide variety of all the styles available for me so I have freedom of choice in the future.

Welcome!

This is a simple blog where I narrate what I am learning about sewing, pattern drafting, fitting, and tailoring.

I'm currently reading 2 sewing books:
How to Design Your Own Clothes And Make Your Own Patterns by Claudia Ein from 1975

Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner, 2022

I will be writing narrations of my readings and might post projects I do to practice what I'm learning. It is a great way to process what I'm learning to help it gain permanence in my memories. It all depends. We'll see how this goes. Enjoy!
